Fred Yates was a self taught and naturally naïve artist. He was born in Manchester before moving to Cornwall where he painted for many years. He later lived in France.

Yates painted with great vibrance in vivid colours with a strong sense of fun. He focused on popular subjects, painting mainly outside. His work depicts local village life, beach scenes and coastal views.
