William Shackleton (1872 - 1933)

Born in Bradford, he studied at Bradford Technical College and was awarded a Royal Exhibition to the R.C.A. in 1893. He travelled to France and Italy on a British Institute Scholarship and studied at the Académie Julian, Paris. At first he painted in Sussex, but after 1905 chiefly in London. Exhibited at the R.A. 1895-1919 and the N.E.A.C. 1901-33, becoming a member in 1909. His first one-man exhibition was held at the Goupil Gallery in 1910. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Leicester Galleries in 1922. Died in London 9 January 1933.
