Son of the artist Albert, he was born in London, of French descent. Initially self taught he was later heavily influenced by Frank Brangwyn, whose work he collected and about whom he wrote many books.

William was very fond of fish and a great collector of shells, both of which frequently feature as the subject matter of his work.
