 Sir Matthew Smith (1879-1959)

Portrait of a Young Woman

oil on canvas
4 by 24 cm.; 17 ¾ by 9 ½ in.

Date c 1955.

Provenance: Sold through Campbell & Franks 1977; Private Collection.

This is a portrait of an unknown young woman. The striped shawl around her shoulders is the same as in two portraits of Angelica Garnett, the daughter of Vanessa Bell who commissioned Smith to paint her daughter in 1957.
Smith collected patterned drapes, which he considered very important as background material. This shawl must have been one that Smith acquired and kept in the studio as background material in the mid fifties hence the date for this painting.

I am grateful to John Gledhill for his assistance with cataloguing this picture. It will be included in any future updates of his Catalogue Raisonne as no. 744a.
