Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959)

A sculptor of large works and portraits and an accomplished watercolourist, Epstein was a controversial figure in his personal life as well as artistically. His most important commissions were for the BMA on The Strand and the Oscar Wilde memorial. He is perhaps most famous for his Rock Drill construction.

His watercolours of nudes are both intimate and compassionate, a quality they share with the sculpted portrait heads which he made of his children.
